Wow, so we finally know what blinded Mamoru. It was pieces of bone/flesh of that woman. And he was unable to give her a clean death (and in a way, a piece of her probably is still w/ him). That must be some serious weight on his shoulders.

And why did the shooter aim at her instead of Mamoru? Seems like Mamoru didn’t so much as feel the presence of the shooter (well, his 6th sense probably was nowhere near as good as he is now), so technically, he would have been shot (or killed) if the shooter aimed at him.

And how the hell did Daiba get such information about Mamoru’s temporary alliance w/ the older sister? I doubt Mamoru shared that information, much less the details about whom he fought against. (He might have gotten info about how he sustained the damage from the bones picked out from Mamoru’s eyes when they were treating him, but not the details)

Btw, is it just me, or do those girls (both older sister/younger sister) have somewhat similar look to Haruka?

Actually, when proofing, we got to talking about the exact nature of this flashback arc. I believe we ended up at the conclusion that this is a flashback which depicts the actual events (within the fictional universe) that occurred and happen to overlap on the duration of Daiba’s story. In other words, Daiba’s story acted as a lead-in to this separate but overlapping flashback.

We also realized, never having given the subject much thought, this is standard practice in story telling. Just think about it for a second. Someone is telling a story they got second hand, then it transitions to a flashback; there are always details the person wouldn’t be able to know.

As for shooting Luna rather than Mamoru, Orion strikes me as the type of person who would rather slowly torture an outsider like Mamoru rather than outright kill him (having Luna explode right before his eyes being included in the torture). Luna was just another soldier to him, so killing her outright doesn’t seem that weird given his typical concern for his troops.

Same shirt maybe, but the other features look more like the kid (namely the eyes). Neither is really an exact match, but you might be able to attribute a difference to an art change — there definitely is one at this point. Also, it seems very reasonable that having your last sight ever [with your actual eyes] be a woman exploding in your arms would make quite a strong impression for her or something directly related to her (ie here sister).

It’s normal that he didn’t feel the presence of the shooter. I mean, he can see just well at this time. When he became blind, his sense of hearing developed as well as his 6th sense.

And I think that Daiba was able to find out what happened because of Sparky. I mean, he told Haruka that there might be 5% of difference between what we read and what really happened. In my opinion he “guessed” and remade the scene as he thought that it was what had happened.

@HMS: Yeah, the girls’ looks are similar to Haruka. But I don’t think it means there’s a connection. It’s just the artwork.

Btw, she might not be dead yet, based on the picture. She only lost her left arm and lots of skin from her left side (she’ll still die w/in 5 min or so, but she didn’t die instantaneously). Too bad, since I don’t like seeing beautiful girls like her die.

And given how skillful she is (w/o even knowing the exact location of the target, she hit both the heart and the head… those of you who has any experience in pistols should know how difficult that is), she might have made an excellent teammate.

Yes, I know some people’s view is that comments should only be read after reading the chapter anyways (which is a fairly reasonable idea), but let’s be cool for the people that don’t even think about it. And WOOOOW…the events in this chapter was totally unexpected. It was probably the most messed up and original way for anyone to become blind. Poor, poor, poor Mamoru! And just when I was beginning to like Luna too! Damn.

HMS does make a good point that the girls’ do look similar to Haruka, especially with the eyes and hair. What I find even more fascinating is that there seems to be “two versions” of what appears to be the “same girl”, one naive and youthful and the other more mature and older. And notice how Luna requested for Mamoru to end her life while she was still human, which was similar to when Haruka requested for her own death if she were to ever be caught. I wonder if there is a significance to that?

I think there might be. I’m sure that Mamoru was beginning to like Luna. Maybe Haruka reminds him of, first Elena, the little girl, then of Luna; maybe that’s why he’s finally more human towards Haruka.

  Well, if he ends up marrying Haruka in the future, I’d say that’s pretty close to one (although I guess it depends on “when” he falls for her). In any case, there’s at least 15yrs of age gap between them, so I frown on such relationship (Mamoru seems like he’s in the late 20s, and Haruka is 13 yrs old… I guess we skipped her birthday, since she started as 12).

      Well, there are cases when an adult falls in love w/ a child as he continues to watch her grow/mature. And given how so much sick fetishes are accepted as “normal” in japan (as far as I’m concerned, lolicons are sickos, and that’s apparently accepted as normal), I can see that happening.

        Mamoru just doesn’t strike me as the type. At this point in time, it doesn’t look as though Mamoru would be interested in Haruka in a romantic sense. I think he sees himself more like her guardian and a mentor, protecting her while teaching her how to survive in the real world. He’s said it himself that she’ll grow up into a beautiful woman, and that he’s looking towards the future. So with that, I think it’s more likely that their romance will bud when she’s older.
        
        And as far as I know, it’s only been Haruka who’s shown to have feelings towards him. Said feelings is a one sided puppy love crush, which is pretty much a given since she sees him as her future husband. Mamoru isn’t aware and neither has he reciprocated her feelings so there you have it. Mamoru is out to stop crime, not commit them.

I have a bad feeling that Mamoru is sort of protecting haruka as a stand in for that woman, since she looks just like haruka would if she were a bit older. Let’s just hope he isn’t only doing it for that reason or I’d feel bad for haruka D: after all her future husband had feelings for someone that looked just like her… He could only be using her.
