    Why do you romanize names with “ou” so often, when only an “o” would be necessary?

    Eg.: “Kojirou” instead of “Kojiro”; “Takezou” instead of “Takezo”, etc…

    …There’s really no need.

       Technically, we would have to make it a long “ō” to be accurate. There is actually a phonetic difference between “ou”/”oo”/”ō” and “o” which even came up in Vagabond itself; Matahachi was pretending to be “Kojirou” but when confronted claimed to be “Koujirou” instead. Interestingly, as you can see in the link, the scanlators at the time were using “Kojirō”, so they mixed what should be contradicting styles together to spell it as “koujirō”. It highlights the difference between a long and a short “o”, and also how “ou” works better to demonstrate said difference than “ō”.

       As for why we choose “ou” rather than “ō”, it’s basically a personal preference thing. I like it because it’s the romanization that’s most accurate to Japanese –as far as I’m concerned anyways. That is to say, it most accurately reflects how the name is spelled in the Japanese itself.

       Take for example a character from another of our series, Haruka Tooyama. Note the spelling of Tooyama; it is phonetically the same as Touyama in that both have a long “o”/”ō” sound, but also note that it has a clear distinction in spelling (which is in fact present in the Japanese). If we were to use the “ō” style, it would be “tōyama” for either “oo” or “ou”. Consequently, that distinction, rare though be it, would be lost just because of a style choice on our part.

       In a manga about Japanese history, I find it easier to justify a method which preserves as much of the Japanese as possible.

          I just found it unusual because I’m used to rendering “ō” as “o” – since the only difference lies in the ponctuation – instead of having a phonetic approximation.

          English is not my native language, so the “o/ou” pronunciation aid doesn’t really do much for me, understandably.

          P.S.: It would appear the chapter you linked to is no longer available. Apparently all scans taken directly from published English versions of the manga have been permanently removed. What a shame…

    I was wondering who are your favorite characters from Vagabond. I think Matahachi, along with Takuan is probably the most interesting character in the series.

    Btw, does anyone notice that the monk Inshun of Hozoin looks pretty much like Sawakita in Slamdunk? And they resemble in character,too.
